The A PLUS Youth Program and the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club have come together to form a top-level select basketball program that incorporates rigorous educational support . With missions so closely connected, a partnership between the two organizations was natural. A PLUS brings an in-depth program model and talented staff. The Boys & Girls Club brings a state-of-the-art facility, infrastructure, and a pipeline of kids. The joint effort is an 11-month program that started as a pilot for the 2009-2010 year for boys in grades 5 and 6. In the fall of 2010, the program expanded its services to boys grades 4 through 8. Fall of 2011, A PLUS will expand services to youth girls in the Greater Seattle area.
Our combined program focus is Academic Success, Character and Leadership Development, Healthy Lifestyles, Skill Development, and Free Laptops.
Basketball – The basketball focus is to develop members’ understanding of the game while also developing their techniques, speed, and agility. Practice sessions are designed to operate 3 days a week with each session lasting approximately 90 minutes. Members will participate in fall, winter, spring, and summer leagues, as well as multiple tournaments throughout the year. Program members will also have the opportunity to travel to compete against the best regional and national basketball competition. In addition to promoting basketball skills, the program emphasizes teamwork and good citizenship.
Educational Development – Upon entering the program, each member is tested to identify academic progress. After each member is evaluated, a lesson plan focusing on homework support and skill development is designed and members are matched with academic coaches to meet their educational needs. Teaching sessions are 3 days per week. Based on each member’s personal academic assessment, a minimum GPA of at least 2.5 will be required to continue in the program.
Other Focus Areas – Computer Skills Training, Summer Camps (Health and Well Being, as well as Leadership Development and Community Service), and a Year-Round Mentorship Program.
